WHEN THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE Innovate - Engage - Chopin 3 & 4

Marshall McLuhan’s famous line “the medium is the message” shifted the focus from content -- its delivery, its containers -- to the nature of a medium itself. We are now entering an age where the two have become so intertwined, the very nature of the content itself is evolving; medium shapes message, and message shapes medium. So how does this play out with platforms for publishing, distributing video, sharing content and commentary, and building communities?

Distributed systems have already been changing computing everywhere; now datacenters, too, are being completely re-architected. Strategic control has moved from the infrastructure software layer -- managing workloads on a single host or container -- to the “orchestration” layer, where IT and developers dynamically schedule application workloads across a fleet of servers and containers. EYES IN THE SKY Innovate - Engage - Chopin 3 & 4

One of the most profound lessons of the internet age is the incredible innovation that happens when we give people and companies a platform they can invent on top of. The U.S. is now on the cusp of opening up another such platform for commercial and social innovation: airspace. Enter drones (the non-military kind). If you think about it, they’re really just flying smartphones, and there’s so many use cases. What can businesses do with drones?

So how do we drive healthcare forward in a system that’s shifting away from fee-for-service towards value and outcomes? Both Accolade, a technology-enabled healthcare concierge, and Omada Health, a provider of digital therapeutics programs, are leaders helping employers to reduce healthcare costs by engaging employees in health and wellness.

The so-called “sharing economy” -- or gig economy -- has signaled everything from the end of “ownership” to the beginning of a new form of capitalism and the future of work. But how will this actually change our physical landscape? From the time of riverboats to railroads, our built environments have been designed around transportation and trade routes. As car sharing and other kinds of sharing take over our world, how will cities -- and everything inside these technological ecosystems -- change?

OUR REALTIME FUTURE, POWERED BY BIG DATA Innovate - Build - Chopin 1 & 2

We’re processing more data than ever, and at speeds that are faster than ever. The more predictive, real-time, and granular we can get, the more responsive and competitive companies can be. This is why “big data” requires “big compute”. And the secret to that lies inside the Spark and Alluxio stack, which was originally invented inside U.C. Berkeley’s AMP (algorithms, machines, people) lab. This segment will feature conversations with the original inventors and builders behind the new paradigm. What are the opportunities when machine learning becomes a property of every application (as is now possible through this work)?

The dream of AI -- much promised, under delivered -- is alive and well. In fact, it’s arrived in many unexpected ways. Once we get past the theoretical questions around general human-like intelligence and look at what’s actually happening, we realize why entire companies like Apple, Facebook, and Google are now shaping themselves around AI. GOING WHERE THE DEMOGRAPHIC IS Innovate - Engage - Chopin 3 & 4

There’s always an elusive, demographic in marketing, whether it’s so-called “millennials,” women, young men, or some other just out-of-reach target customer. We’re entering an age where the precise targeting needed to make those customers easily reachable is more possible and easier than ever. SECURITY FOR THE MOBILE GENERATION Innovate - Build - Chopin 1 & 2

Just as “location, location, location” has been the mantra of real estate, “mobile, mobile, mobile” is the mantra of the new security world. Whether it’s malware gone mobile, hidden in credit card readers, or lost in new kinds of data centers, this session is all about going to where the fraud is out in the wild … And then how to secure against it with adaptive security that works everywhere, from your backend environment to your mobile endpoints. Hear three lightening demos from Illumio (12:00-12:10p), Lookout (12:10-12:20p), and Pindrop (12:20-12:30p).

THE NEW RISK Capital - Brahms 1 & 2

Brick-and-mortar financial services firms make up one of the largest vertical industries in the world -- and an industry that has long existed without meaningful disruption from Silicon Valley. What does a modern finance company look like in the digital age? SoFi, an online personal finance company that provides student loan refinancing, mortgages, and personal loans, is rethinking and rebuilding traditional risk underwriting models from the ground up.

SECURITY: SAVE YOUR COMPANY AND YOURSELF Capital - Brahms 1 & 2

Security is an ever-evolving arms race that grows more sophisticated by the second. How do we “follow the fraud” to keep our companies and users secure, managing all the new and complex endpoints and networks? These three companies demonstrate a spectrum of the powerful new tools available: Illumio will discuss security that allows instant encryption across all environments; Pindrop creates solutions for fraud detection in phone and voice communications; and Tanium uses a web-based UI with natural language queries to provide fast visibility into and control over endpoints and IT infrastructure.

RESEARCH IN ACTION Future - Brahms 3 & 4

Ramesh Johari will present from 3:15-3:30pm, and Balaji Srinivasan will present from 3:30-3:45pm. Ramesh Johari: "Peeking" At A/B Tests: Why It Matters, and What To Do About It. A/B testing is a hallmark of Internet services: from e-commerce sites to social networks to marketplaces, nearly all online services use randomized experiments as a mechanism to make better business decisions. Despite their ubiquity, such tests are usually analyzed the assumption that the experimenter will not continuously monitor their test---in other words, there should be no repeated “peeking” at the results that affects the decision of whether to continue the test. We'll describe why peeking can lead to incorrect interpretation of A/B tests, and a solution deployed by Optimizely that addresses the issue. Balaji Srinivasan: "How to use Bitcoin micropayments to get people to respond to email." What if you could get anyone to respond or react to your email? We show how to do this with the new 21 app, by attaching small Bitcoin micropayments to incentivize recipients to act upon your messages. For example, you can pay $100 to contact 100 Stanford students with a recruiting message, paying only if they reply to the message. You can also use this to send out bug bounties, find users for beta testing, or even incentivize particular individuals to respond to your message. If you want to try it out, sign up at 21.co/corp with the access code A16ZVEGAS.

THE INTERNET (FINALLY) CHANGED POLITICS Main Room

Donald Trump broke every rule of politics. He raised a fraction of the money, hired very little staff, openly waged war on the media and his own political party, and didn't even use a computer. Yet he built an army with his cell phone to win the biggest upset in modern Presidential politics. What does this mean for the future of democracy?
